I feel like these past few years there has been so much controversy around 'self-development' books, and the idea it can cause you to become narcissistic and almost obsessed. Whilst I am sure that the odd few can take the concept of self-development books and use it in a toxic manner, I do not think this groups all books into this genre in one category.

What I love about this genre, is the range of books, from financial, to health to self-actualisation, there is genuinely a book for everyone. But the issue is, I find it difficult to find books which actually 'speak' to me, instead of regurgitating the same words that ten other books have spoken about. I do also feel it is a slightly over-saturated field right now, so I will be talking about my favourites, which hopefully you will enjoy too!

  1. The Mountain is You - Brianna West

This book was the biggest metaphorical slap to my face, and hit me so hard I felt the physical pain. No one wants to hear that they are the problem, but really and truly majority of the time, we are the ones that are holding ourselves back. This book was the figurative mirror I needed to reflect on my actions (or lack of) and really just regroup.

Unfortunately, the way to move forward is to sometimes take a step back, and face the issues that are holding us back. I love introspection and any tool that allows me to look inward and develop myself is very welcomed!

Self-sabotaging behaviours are all-too-common and reading this book really gave me food for thought and I would really recommend journalling alongside reading this book if you decide to purchase.

  1. The 5am Club - Robin Sharma

This is the first 'self-development' book I have ever read, and it really changed my perspective in a lot of manners. The morning is truly the most magical time of the day, and this book really shed light on how to maximise my mornings, and I won't lie to say I wake up at 5am everyday, but waking up early is definitely something that i try to implement into my everyday life.

One of my key takeaways from the book is that no matter if it is a workday or weekend, you need to wake up everyday at the same time. My weekends are super productive, and this means from a social aspect also, when you are better organised it is easier to make plans and overall you just feel better. I personally dislike lie-ins, I end up feeling very sluggish and it feels like the rest of the day just runs away from me, so waking up early is the only way I feel my best.

If you do decide to read any of the books from this list, then let it be this one and you won't regret it!

  1. The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

Not every self-development has to be a non-fiction book with instructions on how to improve yourself, which is exactly what I love about this book. Everybody who reads this book gains something different, what I took from this book is different to what you may take from this book, which is why it is a bestseller, it really caters to everyone.

I think as the years go by, we lose touch of our desires and dreams and this book really puts you in the perspective of someone who is actively going after their true wishes, and this is sometimes the breath of fresh air needed when you are sitting down to read this book during your day to day life, which can sometimes feel mundane, so if you need some extra magic in your life then this book may be for you.

  1. The courage to be disliked - Ichiro Kishimi & Fumitake Koga

I can't end this post without touching upon my current read which I am loving so far, it is a very easy read and similar to The Alchemist, where a philosopher is speaking to a student and discusses how we should harness our inner power in order to transform ourselves and our life.

I won't go into the contents too much and will definitely write a review here once I'm finished for more in-depth thoughts. However, so far it is definitely climbing the list and I am looking forward to see what the remaining pages have to offer!

And that concludes the reading list, I hope you enjoyed and love the books as much as i do, I would love to hear any thoughts you may have in the comments!

Until next time,

Argita xo
